Module 2.2 · Topic 3
Designing Effective Context
Bottom Line Up Front: Good context is deliberately designed, not just dumped into the AI tool. You choose what to include, structure it clearly for AI consumption, and decide whether to build permanent reference…
3.1 What to Include, Exclude, and Prioritize
Similarly to how you might inform a colleague, student or supervisor, think about the context you supply the AI to ensure the right information informs its actions. Unlike those other scenarios, AI won't mind if you experiment a little to find your way to the correct context. Here's one approach you might consider using: (1) State your question. (2) Scan for direct relevance. (3) Identify necessary background. (4) Exclude boilerplate and tangential content. (5) Upload, ask, add only if needed. Start lean, scale up.
3.2 Structuring Information for AI Consumption
Structure inputs clearly to keep the focus on what matters. For example, headings, numbered sections, summaries, and lists instead of prose can be used to communicate a significant amount of information to an AI with far fewer words, and can equally be useful for reducing the size of the output while keeping quality and relevance high.

What to expect:
AI has access to the full context but is directed to focus on Section 2 and only uses summary, intake and approval sections for context. Structured format enables precision.
