Module 4.1 · Topic 5
Intermediate AI for Legal Practice
Bottom Line Up Front: Legal work demands AI that connects to authoritative sources (Lexis, Westlaw) and verification workflows that catch errors before they enter client work. Understanding instruction hierarchies in…
5.1 Connecting AI to Legal Research Databases
Legal research databases (Lexis, Westlaw) contain authoritative case law, statutes, and regulations. RAG-enabled AI can query these databases directly, giving you AI research with verified sources. This transforms legal research from a manual process into an AI-accelerated one while maintaining authoritative grounding.
Traditional legal research: You search Westlaw, read cases manually, synthesize findings. This is thorough but time-intensive.
AI-enabled legal research (without database integration): You ask AI a research question, AI provides an answer based on training data—but training data is stale and may be incomplete. Not suitable for dispositive legal work.
AI with legal database integration: You ask AI a research question, AI queries Westlaw/Lexis in real-time, retrieves current authorities, synthesizes them, and cites sources. This is qualitatively different and suitable for client work when properly verified.
What this enables:
- Real-time jurisdiction analysis: AI checks current law, not training data, for your specific jurisdiction
- Cite-verified research: Every legal claim includes a live link to the authority
- Regulatory alignment checking: AI reviews your contract against current regulatory requirements
- Precedent mapping: AI identifies cases and distinguishes how they apply to your situation
How it works in practice:
- Configure your AI tool (or custom integration) to access Lexis/Westlaw APIs
- Set permissions boundaries (what can AI access? what must be confidential?)
- Ask AI a research question
- AI queries the database, retrieves relevant authorities
- AI synthesizes findings with citations
- You verify the synthesis and use in your work
Key difference from general RAG: Legal databases are maintained by specialized vendors (LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters) with legal domain expertise. They're not general document collections—they're authoritative legal sources. AI's interaction with them is therefore higher-confidence than with ad-hoc document RAG.
5.2 Building Verification Workflows for Legal Output
Legal output must be verified before it enters client work. Unverified AI research can expose your firm to malpractice liability. This process defines how to verify systematically and defensibly.
- AI generates research output (case summaries, statute analysis, precedent synthesis).
- Spot-check key facts (Low-friction check for obvious errors):
- Cite a case? Verify the case exists and the holding is described correctly (read the first paragraph of the opinion).
- Cite a statute? Open Lexis/Westlaw and confirm the statute text matches what AI quoted.
- Time investment: 3–5 minutes per output.
- Verify legal reasoning (Medium-depth check):
- AI claims: "This statute means X." Read the statute's legislative history. Does the statute actually mean X or does AI misread it?
- AI distinguishes cases: "Case A is distinguishable from your situation because…" Check whether that distinction is legally valid.
- Verify citations are procedurally correct (proper format per jurisdiction rules).
- Time investment: 10–20 minutes.
- Validate completeness (Depth check):
- Has AI missed relevant case law? Check Westlaw's "Citing References" and "Shepardize" functions to find cases that cite the authorities AI used.
- Are there countervailing authorities that weaken AI's conclusion? Search for cases with opposite holdings.
- Has law changed? Check recent appellate decisions in your jurisdiction.
- Time investment: 15–30 minutes.
- Document verification (Mandatory for client work):
- Record what you verified and what you found.
- If you modified AI's output, note what changed and why.
- Keep this record for your work product defensibility (if questioned later, you can show your diligence).
- Time investment: 2–5 minutes.
