Module 2.2 · Topic 4

Memory, Persistence, and Continuity

Bottom Line Up Front: AI's memory is limited to the visible conversation. It does not remember past sessions or facts you mentioned once and never repeated. To maintain continuity across sessions or multi-turn…

4.1 How AI Handles (and Forgets) Conversation History

No access to past sessions. Restate key facts across turns explicitly. Turn 1: "Client: mid-market, $50M, 150 employees." Turn 7: "Given our client is mid-market ($50M, 150 employees), what are costs?" Explicit repetition reduces risks of forgetting and drift by carrying forward key information.

Sample prompt:

Turn 1: Our client is mid-market ($50M), expanding Asia-Pacific. Turn 7: Given our client is mid-market ($50M), what are Singapore/Sydney hiring costs?

What to expect:

AI responds with correct context, doesn't contradict itself, factors client constraints.

4.2 Persistent Memory and Cross-Session Strategies

Design a continuity document: (1) After each session, record decisions and key facts. (2) At the next session, upload this summary as context. (3) Reference it explicitly: "As documented, we decided X; this session we address Y." (4) Update before closing. This transforms AI from one-shot tool to cumulative partner where each session builds on the last. (Pro Tip: some of the more advanced, paid models incorporating conversation "compacting" to do this work automatically in long conversations.)
