Module 3.2 · Topic 4

Research & Strategy

Bottom Line Up Front: Use generative AI as a research partner, strategic advisor, and process guide to gather information, map scenarios, navigate complex workflows, and anticipate trends so you think more…

4.1 Researcher: Information Gathering and Synthesis

Use AI to research a topic (all steps: gather information, synthesize findings, identify gaps) as a starting point for verification. AI is a fast assistant, not a substitute for deep verification.

  1. Define your question: Be specific: "How has AI adoption changed in 2024–2025?" is better than "Tell me about AI and law."
  2. Ask AI to gather and synthesize: Request that AI compile information, provide sources, organize findings into themes, and flag gaps.
  3. Identify verification gaps: Note which claims you should verify (statistics, case outcomes, regulatory positions) and which are context-setting.
  4. Verify with authoritative sources: Use AI findings as a map. Verify factual claims using primary sources (case law databases, regulatory websites, official reports).
  5. Supplement with deep research: Conduct targeted deep research on gaps or angles requiring authoritative treatment.

4.2 Strategist: Scenario Planning and Decision Support

Ask AI to map out scenarios, trade-offs, or strategy options so you think through decisions systematically.

When a client faces a major decision, ask AI to outline outcomes, risks, timelines, and compare options on a decision matrix. AI structures the analysis; you inject judgment and decide. Ping-pong the conversation a few turns with follow-up questions, new or altered facts, immutable constraints or negotiable conditions to see how things change. Use AI's structure to clarify your thinking, then choose.
