Module 3.2 · Topic 5
Legal Practice Applications
Bottom Line Up Front: Generative AI can transform core legal workflows such as contract review, legal research, client communication, and court filing preparation by automating routine analysis and freeing you to focus…
5.1 Contract Review and Clause Analysis
Use AI to identify key terms, flag unusual clauses, and spot risks so you focus on substantive issues. Your obligation to exercise competence in AI-assisted review is established in the ABA Model Rules Rule 1.1.
5.2 Legal Research and Case Law Synthesis
Use AI to conduct preliminary (i.e., NOT critical or full) research, synthesize findings across cases, identify trends, and flag gaps that you then research deeply using authoritative sources. The landmark case Mata v. Avianca Airways, Inc., 694 F. Supp. 3d 1 (D.D.C. 2023) established that relying on AI-generated false citations can constitute professional negligence. Verification discipline is mandatory. (Pro Tip: When you pose a legal research question in LawQi, you're reminded that AI tools not explicitly drawing from a connected primary law database are basing their answers from a smattering of internet results and not from a deep understanding of the law)
- Define your research issue: Be specific: "Holdings on [specific language/outcome]?" is better than broad topic research.
- Ask AI to gather and synthesize: Request that AI compile cases, summarize holdings, flag disagreements, and identify gaps. Ask for citations by name and year for verification.
- Verify citations: Use authoritative databases (Westlaw, LexisNexis, Google Scholar) to verify each citation and confirm AI's summary accuracy.
- Identify trends: AI should flag directional patterns (narrowing, broadening, shifting) and contradictory authority. Use these signals to guide deep research.
- Deep research: For unsettled questions or contradictory authority, conduct targeted deep research using primary source databases.
5.3 Client Communication and Matter Management
Use AI to draft client updates, organize matter information, manage correspondence, and track deadlines efficiently. Keep client privacy top of mind and limit these AI uses to tools you are certain meet your professional standard for protection of client-confidential information.
- Status updates and reporting:
- Use AI to draft updates summarizing matter progress, changes in circumstances, and next steps. Edit for accuracy before sending.
- Matter organization:
- Ask AI to compile case information—dates, parties, documents, issues, prior decisions—into a structured summary for quick reference.
- Correspondence management:
- Use AI to draft responses to client inquiries and summarize correspondence threads with action items.
- Deadline tracking:
- Ask AI to compile and summarize filing deadlines, response deadlines, and statute of limitations issues across your matters.
5.4 Court Filing Preparation and Compliance Verification
With tools designed for purpose, you might use AI to prepare court filings. Always check compliance with local rules, verify citations, and organize exhibits before submission. Two approaches: AI assists with pieces, you compile into a compliant package; or you prepare your package and ask AI to check for compliance. Either way, your AI likely doesn't know everything it needs to know about this process, so don't expect end-to-end support from your AI tool. Many jurisdictions now require disclosure of AI use in court filings. For example, General Order 210 from the Southern District of California Bankruptcy Court establishes specific requirements for that court.
When AI has access to authoritative sources of local court rules, it can also serve as a compliance checker: you draft substance; AI verifies format, citations, and exhibit references against court rules. Provide AI with relevant PDF copies or links to the applicable rules and ask it to flag formatting errors, page count violations, citation format issues, and missing disclosures. AI also organizes exhibits and verifies that exhibit references are accurate and consistent.
